Parasite Control & Prevention

Protecting your pet against internal and external parasites.

Pesky parasites like ticks which are as small as an apple seed, can be fatal to your pet. Ticks can transmit terminal diseases such as Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain Fever. Other parasites like fleas, heartworm, roundworm, hookworm, and more can also cause harmful infections in your pet. Our veterinarians provide a wide range of parasite control and prevention plans to protect your pet and your family. To get started, you can give us a call at (416) 362-9696.

What are some signs of parasitic infection in cats and dogs?

Fever, loss of appetite, lameness, joint swelling, weight loss, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, nausea, and vomiting are some signs of a parasitic infection.

What can I do at home to prevent parasites?

Prevention is the best care you can provide your pet. Here are some steps we recommend taking while at home:

  • Pick up your pet’s poop immediately with proper care and wash your hands each time
  • Avoid tick-infested places, such as tall grass and forested areas
  • Don’t let your pet eat feces
  • Stop your pet from drinking standing water as it is a breeding ground for parasites
  • Stick to the parasite control and prevention schedule and regularly give your pet their medicines
  • Take your pet for regular veterinary exams so your veterinarian can detect any diseases early
  • If you notice any signs of illness, consult your veterinarian immediately

Can ticks infect pets in the winter?

While parasites are the most active during spring and hotter temperatures, they can survive near-freezing temperatures and live up to three years. A single tick may lay thousands of eggs before it dies. Sometimes signs of illness are only known 2 to 5 months later, which is why you should have your pet on a year-round protection plan.
